John Silvester, Spokesperson for the Planning Officers Society, welcomed the announcement by Eric Pickles that the government has decided not to go ahead with its plans to put a portion of the New Homes Bonus pot into a new sub-regional funding pot. Silvester said "to allow the LEPs to administer a huge chunk of the funding would not have been democratic."
A DCLG consultation had proposed that up to 35 per cent of the New Homes Bonus could be contributed towards the growth fund, which was announced in response to Lord Heseltine's review of economic growth. But in a letter to local authority leaders the Secretary of State said that the government would not go ahead with the proposal outside of London, where £70 million will be devolved to the London Local Enterprise Partnership.
