POS has joined the technical project group set up by the Adaptation Sub-Committee of the Government's Committee for Climate Change steering the research contract looking at how land-use planning decisions are accounting for flood risk in a changing climate.
The original aims of the project were to:
John Silvester, the POS representative for the LGA on the project group, said "I am pleased to say that the brief has been adjusted in that concentrating on a cost benefit analysis of land allocations avoiding flood risk would be insufficient and a broader assessment of sustainability issues is warranted; and that any findings/conclusions should be framed as lessons for the future in the light of the changing national policy framework."
The intended outcome report is expected to be published in April 2012. It is likley that the Government will use the findings to check how effective local authorities are in dealing with flood risk and other climate change implications.
John Silvester is the project manager of the Society's Responding to Climate Change Supported Learning Group (R2CCSLG).
