PDG Announcement Welcomed but Long Term Solution to Funding Planning Still Needed says POS

Date: 24/3/2005

In response to the latest Planning Delivery Grant announcement the Planning Officers Society welcomes the very significant additional resources available to Local Authorities through PDG and urges Local Planning Authorities to use the grant to improve planning services.

The Society recognises the impact PDG has had on, in particular, performance against BVPIs, but still remains concerned about the retrospective and short term nature of the grant and the concentration on measures of speed of decision making rather than quality outcomes. The Society also welcomes the increase in planning application fees which recognises that the gap between the cost of application processing and fee income was still very significant.

Graham Jones, Senior Vice President of POS said “The PDG allocations and fee increases will help resource LPAs to meet the demanding agenda now facing them. In the short term however the acute shortages of planners in many parts of the country will still place Councils and their staff under great pressure”.
