Number of shared planning services increasing

Date: 16/10/2015

Planning magazine reports that anecdotal evidence from the Planning Officers Society and the Local Government Association suggests that there are at least 15 council partnerships in which planning services are shared, ranging from fully integrated planning departments to joint heads of service.

There is also at least one case in which two districts appointed a joint head of planning with a view to creating a shared service, only to abandon the project.

John Silvester, POS Communications Manager, told Planning that "whilst shared planning servcies was not yet widespread it was becoming more common place." Silvester cited examples such as West Dorset DC and Weymouth & Portland BC and also Cotswold DC and West Oxfordhsire DC.
