New towns are back on the agenda

Date: 20/5/2016

Catriona Riddell, the POS Strategic Planning Specialist, writes in Planning magazine that "New towns - sorry, garden communities - are back on the agenda. Ever since the last programme was abandoned in the 1960s, successive governments have tried to think of ways to reintroduce them without resorting to national imposition."

She adds that "In the latest proposed changes to the NPPF, local authorities are encouraged to take a proactive approach to new settlements "where they can meet the sustainable development objectives of national policy".
