Local politics plays a part in decision making

Date: 8/9/2017

Planning magazine reports that the publication by DCLG of new data on the number of successful appeals in each local planning authority points to a resumption of its regime to improve decision-making by councils.

Some suggest the fact some authorities have out of date plans and five-year housing land supply problems tells us something about the attitude of these authorities to development. Mike Kiely, chair of the Planning Officers Society, said that local politics played a part. "Often these authorities have a political problem in that politicians don't want to take more development."

The regime threatens councils with a "special measures" designation; Kiely commented "If I was a council leader then designation is politically the last thing I want."
