Contentious Planning Matters Are Best Made Locally, Comments POS

Date: 23/1/2015

Speaking to Planning magazine in the wake of the High Court ruling that the Secretary of State discriminated againsttravellers by intervening in appeals involving pitches in green belt Catriona Riddell, the POS Strategic Planning Specialist, said "The Secretary of State has a right to recover appeal decisions but these should be based in their planning merits and must be legally sound. The judge in this case clearly concluded that the Secretary of State had gone beyond these parameters in the way he dealt with Traveller site appeals."

Riddell also commented that "decisions on planning issues no matter how contentious politically, must be made on the basis of sound planning judgments and principles, one of which is that decisions are best taken locally."
