Barn conversions by PD can cause real harm on the countryside

Date: 28/3/2018

Planning magazine reports that earlier this month, the government announced an expansion of the four-year-old permitted development (PD) right that allows the conversion of farm buildings into homes without the need for planning permission.

Steve Ingram, president of the Planning Officers Society, said he has a "real problem" with permitted development rights that, in bypassing the normal planning application route, stop councils from carrying out proper consideration of development impacts upon the countryside. "There are lots of examples of terrible conversions that have caused real harm," he said.
