A new Tory government likely to maintain support for green belt policy

Date: 5/5/2017

Planning magazine suggests that with the polls showing the Conservatives set for a commanding majority in the House of Commonsafter 8 June, planning experts foresee no major shifts in planning policy.

Planning Officers Society strategic planning subject specialist Catriona Riddell predicted that a Tory government with a larger majority would not deviate from its current approach of "unilateral support for green belt policy and leaving any hard decisions to councils through their local plans".

But she warned: "Something will have to give around London, where the Labour mayor is wedded to the metropolitan green belt yet the largely Conservative councils on the edge of London are having to release significant chunks of green belt to meet their housing needs."
