THE STRATEGIC ROAD NETWORK AND THE DELIVERY OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Date: 25/3/2013

The Society has responded to the Department for Transport's consultation on "the Strategic Road Network and the Delivery of Sustainable Development".   We agree that this is an important area for review, given our experience of the Highway Agency's sometimes less than helpful attitude to new development proposals.  There is clearly a need to safeguard the role of the strategic highway network, but this needs to be proportionate in the context of other considerations.

  • Extract: The easing of restrictions to new accesses onto motorways could generate a substantial increase in local traffic congestion on motorways if the network is used specifically to access development.  This dramatically changes the fundamental concept of motorways.
