DCLG technical consultation on Starter Homes regulations

Date: 18/5/2016

The Society remains concerned that the introduction of large numbers of Starter Homes with a limited restriction period will impact adversely on the provision of a mix of affordable housing determined locally though local plans. The introduction of starter homes is not likely to increase the total quantity of housing produced in a given period but is likely to be substituted for traditional affordable housing.

The Society is also concerned that the release of a large amount of subsidized housing for a short term will distort the housing market and fuel house price inflation. The Society believes that there is a role for starter homes but that this should be within the mix of housing types and tenures in each area determined locally though the local plan process.
