... recent research reveals empty shops show the north-south divide.
The Local Data Company has found one in five shops in the North is now empty compared to one in 10 in the South. However, despite the regional divide the research has suggested a "marked improvement" overall. Average vacancy rates have continued to fall since 2012.
From 3,000 towns, shopping centres and retail parks one in five shops in the north is empty compared with one in 10 in the south.
The worst affected region was the North East, which had a shop vacancy rate of 18.8 per cent in the second half of 2014; and London was the best performing region with a vacancy rate of 8.7 per cent.
