"I have been watching with interest Jacques Peretti's series on 'The Super Rich and Us' on BBC2. His analysis shows that the richest 1% are having an increasingly greater share of total wealth and this accumulation of great wealth in a small number of people has far reaching implications for housing provision. His view is that the UK has become the global tax haven of choice and London, and increasingly other UK cities, are attracting investment and speculation by the super-rich on a massive scale. The average house price in London has risen by over 25% in the last year and some 70% of new development is being bought by foreign investors. Within this context there is little hope of providing for the needs of local people.Paradoxically the government is reducing the demands on developers to provide affordable housing.
