Presentation by DECC
By means of tabled slides TH and MH from DECC gave details of past and present UK onshore exploration, the growing importance of unconventional gas resources such as shale gas and the regulatory processes for exploration and development. Since 1919 over 2000 wells have been drilled with no environmental or safety incidents. Last year exploration was focussed on shale gas (Lancashire), CBM and vent gas.
There were now 28 oil fields, 10 gas fields and 4 CBM developments producing energy for the UK. The House of Commons Energy and Climate Change Committee had now reported on shale gas (May 2011) and they had concluded that a moratorium on shale gas drilling in the UK is not justified or necessary at present.
